Jungle Trekking in Bukit Lawang—Home of Batman?

The first week of January Susan had some friends come and visit and we all went to this place about 3 hours outside of Medan called Bukit Lawang. It is a ton of fun! Also, up until Penang (refer to post about trip to Malaysia--coming soon) it was the most white people we’ve seen since leaving Canada!

First we went on a one day trek through the jungle! Here are some pictures (which took forever to upload by the way. I hope you appreciate them):

This is the creepiest (in an unsafe sort of way) bridge I've ever had to talk across. There's not even railings on both sides the whole way across!

See?! No railings on the right hand side!

Look at what I'm walking on. Unbelievable.

More creepy bridge.

Not creepy enough to stop us from pausing for romantic pictures...

This is the rushing river going under that "bridge"

This is our tour guide. His name is Smiley, and he has the longest hair I've ever seen.

He's very nice. We actually know him from Berastagi. We paid him to come be our guide for this trip (that's what he does for his work).

Oh! OK. So I want to show you everyone's backpacks. This is Franziska's (probably spelt wrong).

Andrew's...

Steve's....

Violetta's....

Susan's....

And mine!!! Hahahaha. (if you look back, you may note that Steve's backpack was big enough for two. Pure coincidence.)

There is a honeybee hive up there!

I just think this looks really cool and jungley

Here's everyone except Steve.

Some really cool looking bugs.

EWWWW. A termite nest!

Termite paths in the tree trunk (the leaning tree).

Look! A monkey! An an orangutan in the background. (I know, lame and predictable. But I had to do that joke at least once). But yeah. We got so close to them!

This one was soooo cute! (It took a lot of restraint for me not to make another post about haven't you always wanted a monkey).

See it? In front of Steve? It came so close!

A BABY!!!!

I don't know how people could think people come from monkeys. I've never seen a human baby as cute as this one. haha. oh! umm... except babies belonging to Chelsie, Katy, and Lynette. And yours dear reader, of course.

This is so you can envy how close I got to the monkeys. (Funny side note, Vio almost got attacked by one. It's a lot to blog though, so you'll just have to ask me when I'm back in Canada)

What an angry, angry monkey. Are orangutans even classified as monkeys?! I don't care.

At a river...

How lovely.

Steve can be soooo immature.

But he can also be quite sweet.

At the end of our jungle trekking, we got to raft back! This is the raging river! (It actually did have a very strong current.)

Here you can see the current better... and also part of our "raft"...

That's right. We all sat on huge inner tubes. It was amazing! And dangerous. And wet (we had to put all our things in pastic bags).

Day two in Bukit Lawang we went and explored “The Bat Cave”. I hated it. Steve, the big weirdo, enjoyed it. I hated it because it was dark (duh) and there were spiders and we had to watch where we touched the walls in case there were spiders or scorpions or something else poisonous, and it lasted forever.
Here are some pictures from that horrific ordeal:

The best part about Day Two was this awesome sign.

This part was pretty fun too. I could still see the sun.

THIS, is the world's dumbest bird. Some stupid swallow lives in this pitch black cave (it only looks bright because of my flash. It is absolutely pitch black).

Steve took this picture of this stupid large creepy spider (one of many). Ick.

Steve looking up.... even though it's pitch black...

I like bats anyways. I got this one mid-action!

Look at all those bats! (cave is still pitch black)

This would have been nice... had I not known we had to go back through the cave to get out.
The plus side to the whole bat cave fiasco, is that afterwards we stopped for lunch at this family’s home, and it was delicious! The man (who has been bitten by a cobra (see arm wounds)), gave us fresh coconut juice! Straight from the coconut! MMMM!

Cobra bite wound. He could have died.

Delicious, fresh coconut juice!
