Lovable Missionaries Witness Shocking Loss of Temper!!

So! The other day Steve and I were on our way home from the Sun Plaza (the very best most amazing mall in Medan), and we were taking a bacak home because it was a Sunday and the buses were all jammed full, and I am still something of a spoiled Canadian who values personal space and comfort.

So we are sitting in this bacak, being driven by a pretty old (mid-seventies) man, and it’s busy on the streets. So traffic is pretty heavy; if you have somewhere you have to be, you’re already late because there’s not much room for anyone to be really moving.

There’s this bus in front of us. And I guess our bacak driver thinks the bus driver should move over a bit more to give our bacak some room to get by (I’m not really sure why, since we couldn’t go anywhere), and I guess he felt pretty strongly, because the next thing Steve and I know, is our bacak driver turns off his bike and jumps off, leaving us completely abandoned in the middle of one of Medan’s main roads (even though no one’s moving, it’s still not a good place to sit)! He runs up to the bus driver (a really young 20-ish year old), and starts mouthing off to him through his open driver-side window!

The bus driver tries to get out of the bus.

The bacak driver blocks his door so he can’t.

THEN our bacak driver punches the bus driver in the face with a quick jab!!!!

It was about that time I was feeling a lot less snooty about riding on a packed bus.

Some other men rushed in before things could get any further out of hand, and our bacak driver sulked back to his motorbike and us, his paying customers whom he had abandoned. One of the random men had to kind of walk in front of the bus so the bus driver didn’t gently ram us in a fit of vengeful pride.

To his credit, after punching an innocent person for no reason, our bacak driver calmed right down and acted as if nothing happened… just like any normal crazy person would do…

Quite the dramatic bacak ride!
